SOLO EXHIBITIONS
Chinatown Soup Gallery, INFINITE THRESHOLDS, Manhattan, 2023.
Each of the banners in this exhibition represent each of the seven primary deities of the polytheistic religion of Òrìṣà-Ifá. Although each banner is a contemporary expression, they also contain tradition, folklore and almost 2000 years of history. That history began in West Africa and later expanded in Cuba where it is now referred to as Santería. The Orishas, as the deities are called, with their songs, dances, color systems and mythology, represent various forms of morality and beauty, often symbolizing the natural wonders of the earth.
These banners serve as all art does, to widen our perceptions, to invite us into undiscovered areas within ourselves, and to help us transcend consciousness. By combining ancestral concepts with materials and craft, the banners become thresholds that deliver us from the finite into the infinite.
Malaforma Gallery, FINDING A WAY OUT BY WALKING THROUGH, Brooklyn, 2022.
By combining letterforms rooted in sign painting traditions with messages pulled from free-form journal writing, these paintings materialize both the adversities and the unexpected moments of joy during the capricious years of 2020 to 2022.
Ideas familiar to some of the world’s great spiritual traditions, including koan-like qualities of Zen Buddhism, the psychotropic nature of sacred Amazonian rituals and the polyrhythms of Santería can all be found within the works.
